PRAGMATIC APPROACH TOWARDS AFFORDABLE HOUSING BY INTEGRATION OF SKYSCRAPERS AND SLUM SETTLEMENTS
Architecture Master Thesis Autor: Gokulnath Vasudevan from Faculty of Architecture at Gdansk University of Technology, University in Gdańsk, Poland
The thesis is based on the pragmatic analysis of urban slums due to an intense migration
and unpretentious housing in Mumbai, India by a concluded system of communal housing
strategies and a non-radical approach to an extensive primordial issue.
With respect to the context of urban slums of Dharavi, special studies have been drafted
for finer understanding of the concept of Housing and address the minimum housing
requirement for a family.
Housing in the urban space is becoming a major challenge in many Indian cities. Survival
of the fittest is becoming a growing strategy for living among the people in the below poverty
line. Illegal encroachments and taking over public’s accessible spaces are the modern way to
live among the billion populations.Poorly planned or inefficient urbanization models pose a
major public health challenge. The conditions in such settlements are formidable. The
settlements are being constructed with whatever materials available to materialize the
temporary inconveniences. New issues pop-up each and every day and to tackle the same,
measures are taken in a highly meticulous way to solve the issues in the cramped areas, as
there is very less scope for the development.
