The project is situated on Ross island in the southern district of Andaman & Nicobar islands, India. It intends to appraise and accept the sinking of the island and eulogize the state of dystopia by balancing nature, architecture, and history of the eras that the island has witnessed. Also, focuses on how the people and Indian Navy will react to climate change and adapt to it as the island passes into oblivion.

Project Description:

Ross Island in South Andaman presents a unique condition in terms of it being an island that is facing abandonment due to its rapidly sinking landform. The project accepts the reality that eventually, the island will sink, and proposes measures to delay this inevitable end and design in a way to work around this phenomenon. The island served as a satellite city to the city of Port Blair (about 800 meters away), before it was abandoned. With all settlement concentrated on Port Blair, Ross Island serves as a public and tourist realm to the mainland and has proven its significance through its geographical position by diverting killer waves of the mainland city Port Blair during the 2004 tsunami and by being an active Indian naval base.

On a social level, the thesis tries to address the rich historical background of the city through a series of pavilions dedicated to the three major time periods of its past – Tribal, British and Japanese. These pavilions act as glimpses into the islands past while reminding the citizens as to what the island was and is capable of becoming. The pavilions allow continuous unhindered access to the nature trails that connect different regions of the island and blend seamlessly into the surroundings. It also consists of an observatory, with instruments dedicated to the scientific study that monitor climate change. These instruments, strewn about the nature trails allow people to realise the importance of the island as a centre for research while acting as public congregation points in themselves. Eventually, when the island sinks, it will only be these instruments that remain, thus being the permanent markers of the site. The sinking of the island is inevitable. However, the thesis proposal uses technological solutions to create an architecture that will function in spite of the rising water. Landscape inputs to delay the sinking of the island, doubled with technological strategies used in the design, will definitely allow the island to survive for longer and be etched in time inspire of rising water levels.
